Praying for peace with St. Francis

There is a famous prayer for peace that is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, although it was likely written by someone else. It has been set to music by various artists, often in a slightly abridged form.

It’s also a prayer that can be readily adapted for use in praying the Anglican rosary.

This is just one way to pray the Anglican rosary using this peace prayer of St. Francis. Each section in italics is taken directly from the original (unabridged) prayer in English. Please feel free to use this as is for your own prayers or as a starting point for your own adaptation.

Cross:In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Invitatory bead:May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. (adapted from Phil. 4:7)
Cruciform beads:Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Week bead 1:Where there is hatred, let me bring love.
Where there is offence, let me bring pardon.
Week bead 2:Where there is discord, let me bring union.
Where there is error, let me bring truth.
Where there is doubt, let me bring faith.
Week bead 3:Where there is despair, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, let me bring your light.
Where there is sadness, let me bring joy.
Week bead 4:O Master, let me not seek as much
to be consoled as to console,
Week bead 5:to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love,
Week bead 6:for it is in giving that one receives,
it is in self-forgetting that one finds,
Week bead 7:it is in pardoning that one is pardoned,
it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life.
Invitatory bead:May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. (adapted from Phil. 4:7)
Cross:O God, make speed to save me. O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory to Father and to the Son and the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
