On Good Friday Christians commemorate the death of Jesus on the cross. In the gospel accounts of his death, they record seven different things he said from the cross as he was dying.
These seven sayings make up the core of this set of prayers as we remember his death. Each of the things he said from the cross is used for one of the week beads in each set, and the gospel references are included with each one.
Cross: | Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us your peace. Amen. |
Invitatory bead: | O Savior of the world, who by your cross and precious blood did redeem us: Help, save, pity, and defend us, we pray, O Lord. (from the Proper Liturgy for Good Friday in The Book of Common Prayer) |
Cruciform beads: | He was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5) |
Week bead 1: | Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. (Luke 23: 34) |
Week bead 2: | Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. (Luke 23: 43) |
Week bead 3: | Woman, behold they son! … Behold thy mother! ( John 19: 26-27) |
Week bead 4: | My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Matthew 27: 46) |
