We face hundreds of choices every day—from conscious decisions about what to do, eat, wear, and spend our time to the many unconscious choices about what thoughts we entertain, how we react to others, and the habits we indulge. If we wish to make better choices (both conscious and unconscious), wisdom is the best tool we have.
But how do we obtain the wisdom we need?
Proverbs 9:10 tells us that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Spending time with God in prayer, seeking to know God better, and asking God to teach us His wisdom is our surest route to true wisdom.
This set of prayers for an Anglican rosary is designed to ask God for wisdom and to remind us to seek that wisdom in God with all our hearts.
| Cross: | The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding. To Him belongs eternal praise. (Psalm 111:10) |
| Invitatory bead: | O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant me, in all my doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have me to do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save me from all false choices, and that in your light I may see light, and in your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (adapted to first person from the prayer for guidance from The Book of Common Prayer, p.832) |
| Cruciform beads: | You, O Lord, give wisdom; from Your mouth comes knowledge and understanding. (adapted from Proverbs 2:6) May I always look to you for wisdom and understanding in all things. |
| Week beads 1-7: | Lord, help me to seek your wisdom in all things and to open my heart to the wisdom you seek to teach me. |
| Invitatory bead: | Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know my necessities before I ask and my ignorance in asking: Have compassion on my weakness, and mercifully give me those things which for my unworthiness I dare not, and for my blindness I cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (adapted to first person from the prayer for the answering of prayer from The Book of Common Prayer, p.834) |
| Cross: | Glory to God whose power in me can do infinitely more than I can ask or imagine. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20) |
