We are rapidly approaching our annual celebration of Independence Day (July 4th) here in the USA. While the holiday itself is about our nation’s declaration of independence from England, it also tends to embody our cultural emphasis on individual independence.
We prioritize our separateness and independence from one another and often view any sort of dependence as a form of weakness.
In our relationship with God, however, this prioritization on independence often gets in our way (as it often does in relationships with others, as well, but that’s a subject for another place). God calls us repeatedly into relationship by asking us to trust in God with our full being.
Trusting fully in God this way leads to inner peace that allows us to better weather the storms of life because we are living into the reality of dependence on God and are able to see that as the strength it is rather than as a weakness.
This set of prayers for an Anglican rosary is focused on deepening our trust in God by remembering God’s promises and reminding ourselves that we can trust God in all things
In addition, the simple prayer for the week beads is designed to also operate as a breath prayer. The first sentence (When I am afraid) goes with the inhale, and the second sentence (I put my trust in You.) goes with the exhale. It’s a lovely way to carry this reminder to trust in God throughout your day as you continually seek to deepen your trust and reliance on God.
I hope these prayers lead you into deeper trust in God!
| Cross: | Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. (Jeremiah 17:7-8) |
| Invitatory bead: | You keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You. (Romans 5:5) Help me trust you more deeply and fully, Lord, today and all days. |
| Cruciform beads: | Lord, you are my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in You, and You help me; my heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise You. (adapted from Psalm 28:7) |
| Week beads 1-7: | When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. (Psalm 56:3) |
| Invitatory bead: | You keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You. (Romans 5:5) Help me trust you more deeply and fully, Lord, so my mind will be more steadfast. |
| Cross: | Blessing and honor and glory and power be Yours forever. Amen. |
