The Lord’s Prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray in Matthew 6:9-13 is one that many of us have had memorized since childhood. This familiarity makes it easy for us to speed through it without really hearing and absorbing the meaning of the words in this important prayer anymore.
This set of prayers is designed to help us pray the Lord’s Prayer more slowly and with greater intentionality by breaking it up into the week beads of an Anglican rosary. I’ve provided two versions of this set of prayers: the first uses the more traditional version of the translation from the King James Version, and the second uses a more modern translation from the New Revised Standard. This will allow you to choose whichever one allows you to sink most deeply into the words and meaning and you pray.
Traditional version (KJV):
Cross: | In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. |
Invitatory bead: | O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. |
Cruciform beads: | My help comes from the Lord, who has made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:2) |
Week bead 1: | Our Father which art in heaven, |
Week bead 2: | Hallowed be thy name. |
Week bead 3: | Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. |
Week bead 4: | Give us this day our daily bread. |
Week bead 5: | And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. |
Week bead 6: | And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: |
Week bead 7: | For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. |
Invitatory bead: | Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer (Psalm 19:14) |
Cross: | Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
Modern version (NRSV):
