Praying with Jesus’s seven “I am” statements

In the Gospel of John, Jesus makes seven “I am” statements that describe his identity and role in various illuminating ways. These seven statements are:

  • I am the bread of life (John 6:35, 41, 48, and 51)
  • I am the light of the world (John 8:12)
  • I am the gate (John 10:7-9)
  • I am the good shepherd (John 10:11, 14)
  • I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)
  • I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)
  • I am the true vine (John 15:1-5)

Each of these statements also give us insight into the ways we can relate to Jesus.

This set of prayers for use with an Anglican rosary are designed to keep us connected to these various ways of connecting with Jesus beyond the typical relationship as our Lord and Savior. Take time to think about how you can embody these ways of relating to Jesus in your life today as you pray.

Cross:Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
Invitatory bead:Be present, O Jesus, our great High Priest, as you were present with your disciples.
Cruciform beads:Let the Name of the Lord be blessed, from this time forth for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its going down, let the Name of the Lord be praised.
Week bead 1:Bread of Life, remind me to hunger and thirst after You and You alone.
Week bead 2:Light of the World, help me to see the world around me in Your light and through Your eyes.
Week bead 3:Gate (or door), let me never forget that I am Yours.
Week bead 4:Good shepherd, remind me that I am safe in Your care and sacrificing love.
Week bead 5:Resurrection and Life, remind me always that resurrection and life come through You.
Week bead 6:The Way, Truth, and Life, help me to follow in Your way, holding onto Your truth, so I may live.
Week bead 7:True Vine, help me stay grafted into You so I can thrive in your love.
Invitatory bead:Be present, O Jesus, our great High Priest, as you were present with your disciples.
Cross:In the name of Jesus—Bread of Life; Light of the World; Gate; Good Shepherd; Resurrection and Life; The Way, Truth, and Life; and True Vine—I pray these things.
Amen.
