Praying with Micah 6:8 | Be Still Beads

Praying with Micah 6:8

I have a special love for Micah 6:8 and the way it succinctly sums up what God asks of us.

The New International Version translates this verse as: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

The New Revised Standard Version translates this same verse as: “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

It seems to me that these things that are asked of us are related. Doing justice (or acting justly) requires us to act with mercy and kindness. At the same time, our mercy and kindness must be tempered with justice to avoid creating (or exacerbating) injustice.

At the same time, working toward justice can lead us into self-righteousness and pride, if we aren’t careful. Walking humbly with our God keeps us mindful of our own fallibility and mindful of God’s mercy toward us so that we can better offer mercy to others.

Therefore, prayers of justice that include kindness, mercy, and humility are all the more powerful for the inclusion of all of these qualities.

These prayers for use with an Anglican rosary bring each of the four traits to the forefront with a different one for each week while the week beads themselves continue to bring them all together.

Cross:In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Invitatory bead:Lord, because you have commanded us to love one another,
open my heart so that I may follow your law.
Make me a mirror of the love which you so freely give.
Cruciform bead 1:You are a God of justice (Isaiah 30:18), who desires that justice roll on like a river and righteousness like a never-failing stream. (Amos 5:24)
Help me work with you toward that goal by acting justly in my dealings this day.
Week beads 1-7:Lord, help me this day to do justice, love mercy and kindness, and walk humbly with You.
Cruciform bead 2:Lord, you tell us that the merciful will be blessed and shown mercy. (Matthew 5:7)
Help me offer others the mercy that you have offered to me.
Week beads 1-7:Lord, help me this day to do justice, love mercy and kindness, and walk humbly with You.
Cruciform bead 3:Lord, help me to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to others,
just as You have also forgiven me. (Ephesians 4:32)
Week beads 1-7:Lord, help me this day to do justice, love mercy and kindness, and walk humbly with You.
Cruciform bead 4:Lord, you oppose the proud, but give grace to the humble. (James 4:6)
Help me to remain mindful of my own fallibility so that I may walk humbly with you at all times.
Week beads 1-7:Lord, help me this day to do justice, love mercy and kindness, and walk humbly with You.
Invitatory bead:May I walk in love, as You have loved us, so that I may do justice, give mercy, show kindness, and walk humbly with You.
Cross:Glory to God whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we an ask or imagine.
Amen
