Prayers of penitence

The liturgical season of Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday and ends at Easter, is a time for penitence and repentance.

This set of prayers uses the confession from Rite II of The Book of Common Prayer as inspiration for the week bead prayers to help us focus on the many ways we have sinned and therefore to inspire our penitence before God.

Cross:Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
(Psalm 51:1-2)
Invitatory bead:I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you alone, have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight.
(Psalm 51:3-4a)
Cruciform beads:Lord Jesus Christ, son of the living God,
have mercy on me, a sinner.
Week bead 1:I have sinned against You in my thoughts.
Week bead 2:I have sinned against You in my words.
Week bead 3:I have sinned against You in my deeds.
Week bead 4:I have sinned against You in what I have done.
Week bead 5:I have sinned against You in what I have left undone.
Week bead 6:I have not loved You with my whole heart.
Week bead 7:I have not loved my neighbors as myself.
Invitatory bead:I am truly sorry and I humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on me and forgive me;
that I may delight in Your will,
and walk in Your ways,
to the glory of your Name.
(from the confession in Rite II of The Book of Common Prayer)
Cross:May the almighty and merciful God grant me pardon, absolution, and remission of my sins.
Glory to Father and to the Son and the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

For another option during this Lenten season, see Prayers for Ash Wednesday, which focuses on Psalm 51 and also uses the Rite II Confession from The Book of Common Prayer. Despite its name, it can be used any time during Lent (or the rest of year, for that matter) as a confessional set of prayers.
