Prayers of refuge

Life inevitably has its stormy seasons when nothing seems to be going our way, when we feel alone and beset on all sides.

The Bible is full of promises that God is our refuge, our strength, our defense, and our helper in these times. The Psalms are especially full of reminders of God’s presence in our lives in this way from David’s very real experiences of God’s refuge in the storms of his life.

In our busy, noisy world, it’s easy for us to lose sight of God’s presence and the refuge he offers us in life’s storms.

The set of prayers in this post are designed to use these scriptural reminders of God as our refuge. They are set up for use with an Anglican rosary. Some verses have been lightly adapted (for example, “You, O Lord, are …” in place of “God is …”) to better personalize them.

I hope these scriptural prayers help you find refuge in God through whatever storms life is bringing your way right now.

Cross:The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous runs into it and is safe. (Proverbs 18:10)
Invitatory bead:You have been a defense for the helpless,
A defense for the needy in [their] distress,
A refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;
For the breath of the ruthless
Is like a rain storm against a wall. (Isaiah 25:4)
Cruciform beads:God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. (Psalm 46:1-3)
Week beads 1-7:You, O Lord, are my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalm 18:2)
Invitatory bead:You have been a defense for the helpless,
A defense for the needy in [their] distress,
A refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;
For the breath of the ruthless
Is like a rain storm against a wall. (Isaiah 25:4)
Cross:You hide me in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man;
You keep me secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues. (Psalm 31:20)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
